The GATHERxHearth Pilgrimage Experience

GATHER is a church in motion. It serves the rural landscapes of the North East as a dispersed community that chooses to meet people in the quiet corners where they already live and work. While it operates with a modern and fluid approach to ministry, GATHER is firmly rooted in the established life of the church and works in close partnership with local dioceses to ensure that the ancient wisdom of faith remains accessible to everyone in the community. This isn't a model that waits for a congregation to arrive at a building. Instead, it's a nuanced way of dreaming alongside people, exploring faith through the shared language of the landscape.
Central to this work is the provision of pilgrimage and natural spaces that offer a genuine rhythm of rest. These experience days are built on a long-standing partnership with The Hearth and The Auckland Project, a social impact organisation that has helped GATHER refine a programme of intentional activity over the last few years. It's more than just a walk through the countryside - it’s an active, focused space where people can intentionally step away from the noise of their daily lives to find a different kind of perspective. and to name their Christian faith as a support to this; or to ask questions if someone doesn't have the experience or the spiritual language to talk in this way.

Rest for those who Carry the Load
The world is heavy. GATHER recognises that many people carry a significant mental and physical burden, particularly those whose vocations involve caring for others. Whether you're a full-time carer, a member of the emergency services, or someone in a high-pressure career that leaves your own reserves depleted, these days are shaped for you. It’s a place to put things to one side and allow your own needs to be held for a while.
The community is open and welcoming to everyone. You don't need a specific background to join in. Some participants arrive with a deep and settled faith, while others come because they're socially curious or simply looking for a restorative way to engage with the world. We journey together as a group, grounded in the Christian tradition but moving in a way that’s accessible and kind to those of all faiths or none.

From the Interior to the Open Air
The day begins with a sense of hospitality and quiet conversation. We meet first in the beautiful interior spaces of the estate, where the art, the books, and the deliberate detail of the architecture help to settle the mind. There’s an importance to this initial space; it allows for a transition from the busy world outside into a more reflective state.
As the morning unfolds, the journey moves into the grounds. In early spring, the estate is just beginning to wake up. You can see the daffodils and crocuses pushing through the soil, a physical reminder of recovery and new life. We amble together through the fells and gardens, taking note of the textures and scents of the season. We don't rush.
The group then visited the Faith Museum, to find local and significant artificats and cultural reflections, and we spent some time visiting the incredible Eidolon exhibit, something which really has to be seen to be truly appreciated. Thank you to the Hearth, and the Auckland Project for having such an amazing place to explore and to use as part of our partnership days.

Tom Deakin leads the reflections throughout the pilgrimage part of the day, offering gentle prompts that help participants connect the beauty of creation to their own stories. These collective moments allow the group to explore what pilgrimage truly means to them. It’s a restorative process that many find deeply helpful, providing a space to pause and recover before heading back into the week.
Building Local Community
The GATHER model is designed to be implemented across our local villages and towns, joining people together and building support networks in the places where they live. Our next pilgrimage experiences are scheduled for July 3rd, offering the same restorative focus for anyone needing a pause. Looking further ahead, we are preparing for a significant retreat pilgrimage weekend this June in Cumbria, and also this autumn in September where we will journey to Spain for the Camino.
If you are a minister, a community leader, or an individual who feels your area would benefit from this kind of restorative programming, please do get in touch. We'd love to start a conversation about how we can walk together. Contact: info@gatherchurchteesdale.com
